The value of a humanities education in preparing future-ready graduates
12 March | 10am PT | 1pm ET | 5pm GMT
In an era defined by rapid technological change, political uncertainty, and evolving labour markets, the humanities continue to play a vital yet often under-recognised role in shaping adaptable, fulfilled and future-ready graduates.
This Library Journal-partnered webinar brings together expert voices from the UK and the US to share new research on student success and outcomes. They will provide practical examples of how universities and national organisations are raising awareness of the value of the humanities in preparing students for professional careers.
- Professor Cathy Shrank, University of Sheffield, will present on the “Skills for the Future of English” project, which explores the skills developed during the study of English and seeks to articulate the deep and significant contribution those skills make to the careers, training, and lives of English students. She leads this project for the English Association, a cross-sector subject association based in the UK.
- Dr. James Robson, University of Oxford, will share new research on the career destinations of humanities graduates from the report “The value of the humanities: understanding the career destinations of Oxford humanities graduates”, a mixed-methods study combining graduate destinations, salaries and employer interviews.
- Dean Alain-Philippe Durand, University of Arizona, will speak about the impact of the launch of the applied humanities programme at University of Arizona and other proactive initiatives, which have had the effect of doubling the number of undergraduate enrolments at their College of Humanities since 2018.
Join us for this virtual roundtable discussion on the value of humanities today, with both British and American perspectives on the central role these disciplines play in developing student skills that prepare graduates for the future.
