World-Renowned Collection of Shakespeare Material to be Digitised

Adam Matthew announces exclusive agreement with the Folger Shakespeare Library as part of a new series of theatre-related projects

Adam Matthew is delighted to announce the digitisation of the world’s largest collection of prompt books from the Folger Shakespeare Library, Washington D.C.

The agreement is the result of a growing relationship with the Folger Shakespeare Library and means that Adam Matthew is now able to start the digitisation process of the Library’s entire collection of ‘prompt books’ – annotated copies of plays – ranging in date from 1608 to the late 20th century. Prompt books range from the prompter or stage manager’s annotated script, to rehearsal copies and souvenir editions.

“The Folger's prompt book collection is deep and unique, drawing from three centuries of Shakespeare performances. Making this collection accessible will further the Folger's goal of getting as many digital resources into scholars' hands as possible” - Eric Johnson, Director of Digital Access, Folger Shakespeare Library

In addition, the collection will include twelve ‘Smock Alley’ prompt books of Shakespeare plays from the seventeenth century Dublin theatre – one of the most important sites in European theatre history – and visual material such as costume and set designs, portraits and letters of Shakespearean actors and playbills from key productions.

Senior Publisher at Adam Matthew, Martin Drewe, explained:
“We’re absolutely delighted to be working with the world-renowned Folger Shakespeare Library to provide access to their extensive range of material and we feel privileged to be able to share this content.”

Due for publication in Autumn 2016, the forthcoming collection will provide theatre, literature and popular culture researchers and students unprecedented access to this unique collection in a digital format.
