Charitable donations are an important feature of many businesses: the opportunity to share your success with those less fortunate is a compelling instinct.
Adam Matthew have, over the years, donated to various charities – both locally and overseas. One of the most endearing of these organisations is Homes for Kids in South Africa (HOKISA).
HOKISA aims to empower local communities that are devastated by the AIDS pandemic by providing a safe living environment for children affected by and infected with HIV/AIDS, thereby also providing paid work to members of the local community in the long term.
The first HOKISA home was opened in Masiphumelele township south of Cape Town in 2002 by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and cares for up to 20 children, fulltime. The HOKISA playground is open to all children in the neighbourhood every afternoon and a vegetable garden provides food for the children and the team.
The HOKISA home is not simply an ‘AIDS orphanage’ but
“a home for those children affected by HIV/AIDS whose families are unable to care for them for a certain period of time. Efforts will be made continuously, to reunite the children with their (wider) families, to maintain family values and to encourage spiritual and emotional growth. While at a HOKISA Home, children receive educational, nutritional and medical care as well as counselling where possible.” (HOKISA Support Group statement)
